This glossary list contains some key terminologies used in digital imaging.
- Bitmap
- A file format that records image data as individual pixels.
- Brightness
- The attribute of the visual sensation that describes the perceived intensity of light. Brightness is among the three attributes that specify color.
- Example: The photographer added some more brightness to the images since they appeared dark and distorted.
- Compression
- The process of reducing the image file size for storage, processing, and transmission.
- Example: The files in the folders were compressed so that they can be be saved on the flash drive.
- Cropping
- Cropping is an image-editing/processing technique whereby an unwanted portion or portions of a digital image are removed.
- Example: The images were cropped so that they could fit within the templates.
- Digital Camera
- A camera that stores images on an internal memory chip, removable PC cards, or other digital media.
- Example: The images taken from the digital camera were transferred electronically to a computer for manipulation in the graphic editing software.
- Digital Image processing
- The manipulation of digitally encoded image data.
- Example: Digital imaging entails processing image data compression and image enhancement.
- Digitization
- The process of recording an analog signal in a digital form.
- Example: Digitization is usually applied to audio, still and moving images for increased access or for preservation .
- GIF
- The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is an 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format.
- Example: The photo editing software recognizes gif images.
- Grayscale
- An image type lacking any chromatic data, consisting of shades of gray ranging from white to black.
- Example: John applied a grayscale tone to the pictures taken at the opening ceremony.
- High dynamic range imaging
- In photography and computer graphics, high dynamic range (HDR) imaging is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of exposures or values
- Example: range (HDR) imaging is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of exposures or values in photography.
- JPEG
- The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard specifies the most common compression method applied to black & white and color images
- Example: The graphic design software reveled the image on the flash drive because it recognized the JPEG picture format.
- Megapixel
- A megapixel is one million pixels, and is commonly abbreviated "MP
- Example: The megapixel count of a camera sensor is one of the most common characteristics used in describing and comparing digital cameras
- Pixel
- An abbreviation of picture element, this term may refer to a component of either a digital image or a digital sensor.
- Example: In the case of a digital image, the pixel is the smallest discrete unit of information in the image\'s structure.
- PPI
- PPI stands for pixels per inch, commonly used in describing the resolution capabilities of an imaging device such as a scanner or the resolution of a digital image.
- Zoom
- A camera or software control that causes the image – or part of it – to appear larger (zooming in) or smaller (zooming out).
